As the kingpins of the
notorious DFL (Dogs for Life) family, Dayvon and Ty have lorded over
West Baltimore's thriving drug trade for years. But things change
quickly when Ty gets sent to prison on a suspect charge. Dayvon has
decided he's had enough of the game, and he wants out. Of course, going
straight is much easier said than done. Feeling as though he's been left
in the lurch, and wondering whether Dayvon had something to do with his
incarceration, Ty plots a brutal revenge. Dayvon, of course, isn't
about to lie down and let Ty play him without a fight. To complicate
matters further, Lil' Jay and Stink, a volatile pair of up-and-coming
crew members are preparing to make their own bid for control of the DFL
family. "A Thug's Life is a wrenchingly emotional, action-packed
thriller that promises to rivet readers from the first page. Against an
unrelentingly bleak urban landscape, author Thomas Long mixes an
explosive cocktail of sex, drugs, murder, and crime. He mines the
troubled interior lives of Dayvon and Ty as they wrestle with their
outsized demons and ultimately face off in a vicious battle of wills. As
the novel races toward a brutal culmination, one thing becomes
chillingly clear above all else: when it comes to the thug's life, no
one truly escapes without paying the steepest of prices.
My thoughts:
To be honest, I was skeptical about reading this book. The cover on the copy I had looked kind of low budget (which is different from the cover above), and I didn't want to be disappointed like I have been with some other urban fiction books I've read. I couldn't have been more wrong. This book was really good! I loved Dayvon as a character. He seemed to really have peoples best interests at heart despite his thuggin lifestyle. Ty was a jerk and he got everything he deserved with his grimy self. This book kept me interested right up until the end. I loved all of the little twists and turns the author threw in there. I am so glad everything ended the way it did! This was my first book by Thomas long, but I would definitely read another by him. This is a great book overall and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good action packed thriller!
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars
