Recipe tips:
- For the best flavor, use freshly shredded cheddar cheese instead of pre shredded cheese. Be sure the cream cheese is fully softened before mixing so the dip becomes light, creamy, and easy to stir. Cook the bacon until it's crispy, then let it drain well on paper towels before crumbling so it adds great texture without making the dip greasy.
- This dip is delicious served immediately, but it tastes even better after chilling for an hour or two, giving the flavors time to meld together. If the dip becomes too firm after refrigeration, let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes before serving to soften slightly. Garnish with extra crumbled bacon, shredded cheddar, a sprinkle of paprika, or chopped green onions for an extra pop of flavor and color. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
Swaps and additions:
- This dip is easy to customize based on your tastes and what you have on hand. Swap the cheddar for Colby Jack, pepper jack, Monterey Jack, smoked gouda, or a sharp white cheddar for a different flavor. Turkey bacon works well in place of traditional bacon, and hot honey or regular honey can be substituted for the maple syrup if you'd like a different type of sweetness.
- For even more flavor, stir in sliced green onions, diced jalapeños, chopped chives, or a dash of your favorite hot sauce. A pinch of cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper adds a little heat, while everything bagel seasoning or ranch seasoning mix gives the dip a fun twist. You can also substitute light cream cheese or Neufchâtel cheese for a slightly lighter version without sacrificing the creamy texture.
