Recipe tips and substitution ideas:
- If you're using lean ground beef, you may need to add some oil to the pan before adding the beef so it doesn't stick. These are also great with ground chicken, turkey or lamb, just make sure to cook to the proper temperature.
- Try using any taco or burger toppings you love with this recipe! Get creative and make them unique every time. Try different seasonings in your ground beef too.
- Medium high heat is a must with this recipe. You need the heat higher so the burger and tortilla get crispy.
- We usually make these on an electric griddle, so the process goes faster. They're amazing on a Blackstone too!

Smash Burger Tacos
Ingredients
- burgers:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 8 small flour tortillas
- ½ cup shredded cheese
- sauce:
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup dill pickle relish
- 2 tablespoons dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon seasoned rice vinegar
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- toppings:
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1/4 cup chopped onions
Instructions
- Burgers: Start by seasoning the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. Then, divide it into 8 equal portions and shape them into balls.
- Take each meatball and press it down onto a tortilla, using your fingers to flatten it out.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium high heat. Place a tortilla in the skillet with the meat side down. Use a spatula or another flat tool to smash the beef down, creating a thin patty that covers most of the tortilla's surface.
- Cook the burger on one side for about 2 minutes until the beef begins to brown. If desired, use the back of the spatula to press down on the burger to flatten it further.
- Flip the tortilla and burger over and immediately sprinkle a portion of shredded cheese over the burger.
- Cover the skillet with a lid to allow the cheese to melt and continue cooking for another 1 1/2 to 2 minutes, or until the burger is cooked to your desired level of doneness.
- Remove the smash burger from the skillet and set it aside. Repeat this process with the remaining smash burger tacos.
- Sauce: In a small mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, Dijon mustard, vinegar, paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix well until all the ingredients are fully blended. Set the sauce aside.
- Assemble tacos: Top with lettuce, onions and the prepared sauce. Fold the tortilla in half, creating a taco shape. Serve immediately.

My mom made something like this. She spread the ground meat mixture on top of a loaf of French bread (split in half) and cooked it in the broiler to heat through and melt the cheese. I hadn't though of that in forever. Thanks for sharing.
