Recipe tips and substitution ideas:
- Store the shredded chicken and sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a splash of water or broth if the sauce thickens too much.
- This recipe is perfect for meal prep! You can mix the sauce ingredients (soy sauce, honey, hoisin, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, and black pepper) up to 2 days in advance and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When ready to cook, simply pour the sauce over the chicken in the slow cooker and cook as directed.
- For easy freezer meals, portion the cooled shredded chicken and sauce into freezer safe containers or resealable bags. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating on the stovetop or in the microwave until hot.
- You can also prepare this as a freezer to slow cooker meal: combine the uncooked chicken and sauce ingredients in a freezer bag, remove the air, seal tightly, and freeze flat. When ready to cook, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and follow the original cooking instructions.
- Swap chicken breasts for chicken thighs or even pork tenderloin. If you’re out of hoisin sauce, use oyster sauce or a mix of soy sauce and brown sugar, and substitute rice vinegar with apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar or white wine vinegar. For sweetness, honey can be replaced with maple syrup or brown sugar, and coconut aminos or tamari make great lower sodium, gluten free soy sauce alternatives.
- To boost the flavor, try adding grated fresh ginger, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes, or diced jalapeno for a little heat. Garnish with sesame seeds, green onions, or cilantro before serving, and if you prefer a thicker sauce, whisk in a cornstarch slurry right before serving.
