Recipe tips and substitution ideas:
- Let the sauce cool completely before storing. Keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze it in portions for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge or reheat gently on the stove before using.
- Stir in crushed red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce for a little heat, or add a splash of balsamic vinegar for extra depth and sweetness. Fresh herbs like basil, parsley, or oregano can be added at the end of cooking for a burst of freshness, while a pinch of smoked paprika brings a subtle, earthy flavor. For a richer, saltier sauce, mix in a spoonful of grated Parmesan or Pecorino cheese just before serving.
- Swap Italian seasoning for a mix of dried basil, oregano, and thyme if that’s what you have on hand. Fresh garlic is best, but garlic powder works in a pinch (use ½ teaspoon per clove).

- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute, just until fragrant.
- Stir in the tomatoes, onion powder, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
