If you grew up in MN, you've most likely eaten this or something similar at some point. I remember eating this at potlucks or family gatherings alot throughout my childhood. I was super excited I found this recipe online so I could try it again. 

The smell of it baking in the oven brings back alot of memories! Mushrooms would be a great addition to this recipe as the original suggests. We love how it turned out and served it with some bread! Yum!

Minnesota Wild Rice Hotdish Recipe

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 c. onion, chopped
  • 1 c. celery, sliced
  • 1 c. carrots, sliced
  • 1 c. wild rice, rinsed well
  • 3 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 2 c. cold water
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • black pepper, to taste
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and onions until beef is no longer pink. Drain excess grease.
In a greased 9x13 baking dish, combine celery, carrots, and wild rice. Add ground beef and onion mixture next. In a bowl, combine water, soy sauce, pepper and soups. Pour over other ingredients and mix well. Bake for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  5. Hi, I followed your recipe just as instructed. Flavour was delicious however lot of the wild rice wasn't fully cooked. My guess is the wild rice wasn't able to absorb enough moisture due to thickness of the creme soup. What went wrong?

    1. I'm not sure what may have went wrong. With the water and soups mixed together there should've been enough liquid to absorb and make the Rice tender. I would suggest to maybe add a little extra water or even milk next time and hopefully it turns out better for you. Thanks for stopping by!
