Smoked Salmon on Avocado Toast is one of those simple but elegant recipes that delivers big flavor in just a few minutes. Crispy French bread slices are brushed with olive oil and toasted to perfection, then topped with a creamy avocado spread mixed with Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and a touch of salt and pepper. That smooth, tangy base pairs beautifully with the savory richness of smoked salmon, while fresh dill and a sprinkle of salt and black pepper add brightness and a little freshness to every bite.

I’ve always been a huge fan of smoked fish, so this recipe holds a special place for me. Growing up, my dad had a homemade smoker built out of an old fridge, and every spring he’d use it to smoke sucker fish. The flavor was incredible, and to this day I still can’t get enough of smoked fish from our local meat market, the next best thing to my dad's. Putting it on avocado toast feels like the perfect way to enjoy that smoky goodness, simple, satisfying, and a little nostalgic, too.

Recipe tips and substitution ideas:

  • If you’d like to switch things up, try sourdough, rye, or even bagels as the base, and swap the Greek yogurt and mayo for whipped cream cheese to create a richer, tangier spread. Smoked trout or mackerel can be used in place of salmon, while herbs like chives, parsley, or basil make delicious alternatives to dill. You can also use lime instead of lemon. Try your favorite seasoning blends instead of salt and black pepper. We love red garlic jalapeno seasoning!
  • While this recipe is best enjoyed fresh, there are a few tricks that can help with make ahead prep. You can toast the French bread slices a few hours in advance, then store them in an airtight container at room temperature until you’re ready to assemble. To save time, you can also prepare the avocado spread 2-3 hours ahead and press a piece of plastic wrap directly against the surface to slow browning.

Smoked Salmon on Avocado Toast

Smoked Salmon on Avocado Toast is an easy yet sophisticated recipe featuring golden French bread, a creamy avocado spread, and rich smoked salmon. A touch of fresh dill and a dash of black pepper add brightness and the perfect finishing flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 loaf French bread
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 8 ounces smoked salmon
  • Few sprigs of fresh dill, chopped
  • salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven broiler on high.
  2. Slice the French bread into ½ inch thick pieces and lightly brush both sides with olive oil. Arrange the slices on a baking sheet and place the rack about 6 inches below the broiler element.
  3. Broil the bread for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Watch closely to prevent burning.
  4. In a medium bowl, scoop out the ripe avocado and mash with a fork until smooth. Stir in the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt and pepper until well combined.
  5. Spread a generous layer of the avocado mixture onto each toasted bread slice. Top each with a slice of smoked salmon, then sprinkle with fresh dill and an extra pinch of salt and pepper.
  6. Serve immediately.
