This Pear Apple Crisp is extra special to me, it’s cozy, nostalgic, and a little symbolic of balance in my life right now. I made a New Year’s resolution to focus on my health and fitness this year, and my boyfriend and I even got a YMCA family membership to help stay accountable. Our goal is to make it to the Y at least a dozen times each month (the health insurance discount doesn’t hurt either!). So yes, it might seem funny to be sharing dessert while talking about health goals, but I’m all about moderation. A homemade treat every now and then is totally worth it.
This crisp is my lighter twist on the classic apple crisp my mom used to bake every fall. We had a big apple tree growing up that produced hundreds of apples, and she always turned them into the most amazing desserts. I added pears this time for an extra layer of sweetness and flavor. The filling is made with fresh apples and pears simmered with sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla until bubbly, then topped with a simple cinnamon, flour and butter crumble that gets golden and crisp in the oven. It’s cozy, comforting, and the perfect way to enjoy a little something sweet while keeping life in balance.

Pear Apple Crisp
This recipe is inspired by my mom’s classic apple crisp, with a pear twist that adds an extra touch of sweetness.
Ingredients
- Filling:
- 5 cups apples, peeled and sliced
- 3 cups pears, peeled and sliced
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Topping:
- 3/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 6 tablespoons butter, room temp
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Arrange the sliced apples and pears evenly in the bottom of the prepared dish.
- In a medium saucepan over medium high heat, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking, stirring often, until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the vanilla extract, then remove from heat. Pour the hot mixture evenly over the apples and pears.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and butter. Mix with a fork or your fingers until the mixture becomes crumbly. Evenly sprinkle the topping mixture over the fruit.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is lightly browned and the fruit is bubbling.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, if desired.
