Book Review: The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis

This post contains affiliate links. For more info, click here!

Book Summary:

"We are a family on a journey to a place called wonderful" is the motto of Deza Malone's family. Deza is the smartest girl in her class in Gary, Indiana, singled out by teachers for a special path in life. But it's 1936 and the Great Depression has hit Gary hard, and there are no jobs for black men. When her beloved father leaves to find work, Deza, Mother, and her older brother, Jimmie, go in search of him, and end up in a Hooverville outside Flint, Michigan. Jimmie's beautiful voice inspires him to leave the camp to be a performer, while Deza and Mother find a new home, and cling to the hope that they will find Father. The twists and turns of their story reveal the devastation of the Depression and prove that Deza truly is the Mighty Miss Malone.

My thoughts:
I'm a sucker for Young Adult fiction. Some of the best books in my opinion come from that category. The Mighty Miss Malone is no exception.

This book is set in the 1930's and the author really gives the reader an idea of how it was for an African American family in the north during that time. Deza is an especially fun character, full of energy and spunk. I love that she's an avid reader, and I love even more when she discovers books that she truly loves.

You will love her family with all the struggles and mishaps they endure. Her father is crazy funny, her brother is super talented, and her mother is hardworking. I love the historical aspect and how younger readers can still relate with Deza and her family, even though the book is set in a totally different time and place. I would really love to see more books like this being published for our youth.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars

Crab Bisque Recipe

This post contains affiliate links. For more info, click here!

This rich and creamy soup is great for chilly winter days! Perfect served with a side of crusty bread!

How's the weather where you're at right now? Thankfully, it's been very mild here for the last couple weeks, 30's and 40's. That's pretty unusual considering it's the end of January, But I'll take it! I hope everyone's staying safe in the Northeast right now!

Today's recipe is for a rich and decedent Crab Bisque! I've had this recipe in my draft folder for the last few weeks, and am now just getting to posting it. My Dad treated all of us to crab legs for our Christmas dinner this year and I was the lucky one who got to take the leftovers home with me. I've been dying to make a bisque at home, but seafood is usually out of budget, so I'm especially excited about this recipe!

Strawberries and Cream Crepes Recipe

These gorgeous crepes are perfect for breakfast or dessert! Each bite is amazingly delicious!

These gorgeous crepes are perfect for breakfast or dessert! Each bite is amazingly delicious! Strawberries and Cream Crepes from Hot Eats and Cool Reads

For those of you who have a special someone in their life, I have a perfect treat for you to make them on Valentine's Day!

Special someone can be your significant other, kiddos, friends, or even yourself. Oh yes, I'd totally make these for myself. Because, who really wants to share something this good anyway?

These crepes are heavenly. Straight from the Strawberries and Cream God.

I first introduced the cream used in this recipe back in 2013 and I've been in love with it ever since!

That first recipe was for a fun and patriotic Berries with Mascarpone Cream! I didn't stop there, next up was Cream Puffs

Both are amazing goodness so make sure to stop by and check out the recipes!

Now back to these crepes! We decided to use fresh strawberries with the cream, but any berry would be just as fabulous.

My sister handled the crepe making for this recipe, which she is a pro, might I add! They cook up quick and within 20 minutes you have a tasty breakfast or dessert.

I love them more for breakfast, but they are good anytime! Enjoy!

Strawberries and Cream Crepes

What you need:

crepes:
4 eggs
1/2 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
dash salt

cream:
1- 8 ounce container mascarpone cheese
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

fresh strawberries, sliced

Directions:

crepes:
Place all crepe ingredients in a blender, except flour. Blend together. Add flour, then blend again until combined.

Lightly butter an eight inch non-stick skillet and heat on medium. Once skillet is heated, add 1/4 cup batter to the pan, and swirl until the bottom of the pan has a very thin layer of batter. Cook for about 30 seconds, until edges can be lifted with a spatula. Use fingers to flip crepe, and cook for an additional 10-15 seconds. Place cooked crepes on a plate with wax paper between to prevent sticking. Repeat until batter is gone.

cream:
Whip the mascarpone in a medium sized mixing bowl with an electric mixer. Add whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla. Whip until thickened. Refrigerate until serving.

Add cream and strawberries in a line down the center of the crepe. Roll and serve!

These wonderful berry crepes are perfect for breakfast or dessert! They are easy to make, amazingly delicious and are great with strawberries, blackberries, blueberries or cherries!

Classic comfort food with an easy to make homemade sauce! This recipe is sure to please the whole family! Easy Classic Lasagna from Hot Eats and Cool Reads

Lasagna is one of those comfort foods from my childhood. I always remember being super excited when my Mom made some for dinner. I'm still a lover of everything pasta now, and get just as excited when it's on my plate for dinner.

This Easy Classic Lasagna is especially good. The hot Italian sausage addition is so tasty, in fact when mixed with the sauce, cheese and noodles, it's not even spicy at all. Just full of flavor! The combo of mozzarella and ricotta is amazing, and the parmesan added on top with the mozzarella is the perfect flavor touch!

Hello blog friends! Sheena's sister Shannon here with another recipe that we grew up eating!
This super easy soup may not sound like much, but the flavor is so wonderful and totally comforting.  I remember our mom making this with fresh red potatoes and peas straight out of the garden.  Wow, that was amazing.  I highly recommend that if you have a garden or access to a farmer's market!

Lemon Parmesan Salmon Burgers with Green Onion Mayo Recipe plus Giveaway

Thanks to Morey's Fine Fish & Seafood for sponsoring this post. All opinions are 100% mine.

Everyone who knows me well, knows I am a huge fan of fish and seafood. Salmon happens to be one of my favorites, so when Morey's Fine Fish & Seafood sent me their Fish Creations Lemon Parmesan Atlantic Salmon, I was super excited to try it out and share with you! Morey's is a well known name around central Minnesota! Most people pass by their plant in Motley, Minnesota on their way up to the cabin or some other "up north" destination. They've always been known for their great quality fish and seafood.
These salmon fillets can be found in the freezer section in the grocery store, and they come individually wrapped, making it easy for single servings. There are 2 fillets in the 10 ounce package and they are gluten free. The package includes instructions for grilling, baking or even microwaving. We used the oven preparation method and the fillets were perfectly baked.
